Thank you to LA Tech Cares for supporting 9 Dots’ mission to provide students access to a rigorous, transformative Computer Science Education, no matter their demographic or socioeconomic status.
Research estimates that just 7.3% of elementary schools offer Computer Science (CS) courses to their students. Of the elementary schools that do offer CS curriculum, those in low-income communities are the least likely to do so, and Black, Latinx, and female students are grossly underrepresented in CS classrooms.
9 Dots is working to flip the script.
9 Dots was founded as a small after-school program at a Hollywood elementary school with the goal of teaching STEM skills in an engaging way. Now, the 9 Dots Get Coding program serves over 8,000 K-6 students and 310 teachers at Title I elementary schools throughout the greater Los Angeles area, teaching kids the CS skills they need to thrive in our technological world. As a community of educators, researchers, and engineers, 9 Dots is committed to bringing transformative CS education to all students – particularly those from historically underserved and under-resourced communities. By creating engaging learning environments that foster joy, promote fearlessness in problem solving, and support students in building their identity as a coder, we aim to empower students to rethink the way they voice their ideas, understand their world, and imagine their future.
Next year, we will expand our reach to 28 schools, serving more than 10,000 students and 320 teachers at Title I elementary schools in Los Angeles – and we are just getting started. We have an ambitious goal to bring Get Coding to all 1,000 Title I elementary schools in Los Angeles within 15 years. With the support of LA Tech Cares, 9 Dots will be well-positioned to continue the critical work of bringing CS education to LA’s youngest underserved students and shaping the future of a more inclusive and diverse tech industry.
